How to Increase AdSense CPC and RPM (Proven Strategies)

By Archit KarmakarMay 29, 2026

Are you getting thousands of visitors but only making a few dollars? The problem isn't your traffic; it's your CPC (Cost Per Click) and RPM (Revenue Per Mille). Here is how to fix it and double your earnings.

Hi, I'm Archit Karmakar. Over the past few years, I've audited hundreds of AdSense accounts. A common theme is publishers celebrating high traffic numbers while secretly weeping over a $0.05 CPC.

You do not necessarily need more traffic to make more money. Often, you just need better traffic and better ad placements. Let's break down the actionable steps to increase your CPC and RPM today.

1. Target Tier-1 Traffic

Geography Dictates CPC

Advertisers in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia (Tier-1 countries) bid significantly more for clicks than advertisers in India, Pakistan, or the Philippines. If 90% of your traffic is from Tier-3 countries, your CPC will mathematically never exceed $0.10.

Action: Use Google Search Console to see which keywords are bringing US traffic. Write more content clustered around those specific topics.

2. Shift to Commercial Intent Keywords

There are two types of keywords: informational and commercial.

  • Informational: "What is a mortgage?" (CPC: $0.30)
  • Commercial: "Compare mortgage rates in Texas" (CPC: $15.00)

Advertisers want to place ads on pages where people are ready to buy. If your content is purely informational, you attract readers who just want a quick answer. Write buying guides, comparisons, and product reviews to trigger high-paying ads.

3. Optimize Ad Placements

Viewability Matters

If an ad loads at the bottom of the page and no one scrolls down to see it, Google records a 0% viewability rate for that ad slot. Over time, Google lowers the CPC for that specific slot.

Action: Place ads where people actually look. "Above the fold" (near the title) and inside the main content body perform the best. Disable footer ads if they have terrible viewability.

4. Block Low-Paying Ad Networks

AdSense allows third-party ad networks to bid on your inventory. Sometimes, cheap ad networks win bids and show low-quality ads that pay $0.01 per click.

Go to your AdSense Dashboard > Brand Safety > Content > Blocking Controls. Review the "Ad Networks" section and block networks that have a high impression share but a very low revenue share.

5. Improve Page Speed

If your website takes 5 seconds to load, the user will scroll past the ad slot before the ad even renders. The ad counts as an impression, but the user didn't see it. This kills your Click-Through Rate (CTR) and drags down your RPM. Use a lightweight theme, optimize images, and use a caching plugin.

Conclusion

Increasing your AdSense CPC and RPM is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on writing commercial-intent content targeted at Tier-1 countries, and the algorithm will naturally start serving higher-paying ads to your visitors.
